For more than two hundred years, the only direct link between Agawam and Springfield founder Willam Pynchon and the landing at York Street on the opposite shore.  In 1658 Thomas Cooper was granted a lease to "land people below ye mouth of Agawam river" (now known as the Westfield River).  Ferry service ended here in 1879 with the steamboat Agawam when the first South End Bridge was built.  The original bridge was replaced in 1954 with the present structure, named in 1979 for prominent local businesswoman Julia B. Buxton, who was very active in area civic and educational programs.  This path to the shore very likely follows the original route to the ferry landing.
