Description
This section of the East Branch of the Westfield River cannot be paddled most of the year.  If any of you reading this know different, please let us know.  All the access points listed, from 1 to 11, are primarily good for fishers.
There are two particularly challenging stretches because of the difficulty of access.  They are:

1. From [7] the Route 9 Rest Area near Wilder Road at Mile 45.0 East
To [8] the Route 143 Bridge West Chesterfield - Mile 40.3 East

2. From [9] Chesterfield Gorge - Mile 39.1 East
To [10] Army Corps - Indian Hollow Campground - Mile 34.2 East

As you can see these are 4.7 miles and 4.9 miles.  Be prepared if you wish to venture down these stretches.  But, the reward of catching fish that have not seen a fisher for some time is great!  I encourage you to carefully study the Google earth and USGS Maps below.  Print them out and have a great adventure.

Chesterfield Gorge
This remarkable natural formation allows visitors to experience both the region’s geologic past and its recreational potential. The ancient rock emerged from the seabed a half-billion years ago, then was carved for thousands of years by glacial action and roaring meltwater. Today, this stretch of the Westfield River attracts walkers and cyclists, photographers and anglers.
This dramatic rock canyon features 70-foot-high walls carved by centuries of rushing water from the East Branch of the Westfield River. On your hike of the half-mile trail along the cliff tops, you'll take in breathtaking views of the gorge, the river, and the surrounding forest, which nurtures hemlock, ash, and oak, and is home to bears, bobcats, and turkeys.
Chesterfield Gorge is the entrance to an extensive natural recreation area along the Westfield, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River for its strong ecological and recreational values.
