     There are several other possible access areas along this stretch.  We have chosen the following five.

[4] The Island Cartop Access - Mile 148.2
Position: 42-51.08 N 72-33.21 W
       Altitude: 217 feet
Description: 
Roadside launch for car-top boats only.

Directions (2.1 miles, 6 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 2 Brattleboro/Bennington Route 9 West:
  1. At mile 0.4, at the end of the exit ramp (the ramp is long), turn left onto Route 9 East/Western Avenue.
  2. At mile 1.5, at stop light, turn right onto Main Street.
  3. At mile 1.8, at stop light, turn left onto Bridge Street/Route 119 East.
  4. Pass over the first bridge to the island.
  5. At mile 2.0, pull over on right (down river side) just before the second bridge.
Car top launch only on the down-river side of the road.
The launch is between the bridges, just before the second bridge.
[1] Putney Landing Access Area - Mile 157.1
Position: 42-57.73 N 72-31.21 W
       Altitude: 223 feet
Description: 
      There is plenty of parking. If you are launching a boat by trailer, keep in mind that the ramp is steep.  If you are nervous, consider driving another 0.6 miles to the Dummerston Landing Access Area. (42-57.44 N 72-31.68 W​) at Mile 156.5

Directions (0.4/0.8 miles, 3 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 4 Putney/Route 5:
  1. If traveling North, at the end of the exit ramp,  turn right onto Putney Landing Road.
  2. If traveling South, at the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Route 5 North, then right onto Putney Landing Road.
  3. Cross over the railroad tracks.
  4. Follow the dirt road to the sign below.
Turn left into the landing area.  Plenty of parking
The boat ramp is good for all types of boats.
[5] Prospect Street Hinsdale Access - Mile 143.0

       Altitude: 217 feet
Description: 
All types of boats.

Directions (7.5 miles, 13 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 2 Brattleboro/Bennington Route 9 West:
  1. At mile 0.4, at the end of the exit ramp (the ramp is long), turn left onto Route 9 East/Western Avenue.
  2. At mile 1.5, at stop light, turn right onto Main Street.
  3. At mile 1.8, at stop light, turn left onto Bridge Street/Route 119 East and cross the Connecticut River via two bridges.
  4. Follow Route 119 East, south along the river.
  5. At mile 7.4, turn right onto Prospect Street.
  6. At mile 7.5, turn right into the access area.
After launching, travel 200 yards north to a bridge.  Go under the bridge to access the river.
[2] Chesterfield River Road Access - Mile 153.5

The gravel launch is very basic and roadside. Limited parking

Directions (5.0 miles, 9 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 3 Brattleboro/Keene NH Route 9 East:
  1. At the end of the exit ramp, turn onto Chesterfield Road.
  2. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit and stay on Chesterfield Road.
  3. At mile 0.4, cross the Connecticut River on Route 9.
  4. At mile 2.9, turn left onto Brook Street.
  5. At mile 3.6, at the stop sign, turn left onto Main Street.
  6. At mile 4.0, the street becoes River Road.
  7. At mile 4.8, arrive at boat ramp on left.

[6] Vernon Dam - Portage - Miles 141.9 - 141.7
Positions
       Take-Out: 42-46.30 N 72-30.85 W
       Altitude: 217 feet
       Put- In: 42-46.20 N 72-30.96 W
       Altitude: 181 feet
Description: 
Take Out above dam on river right (west) side  above the barrier. 
Follow the ramp way up to Governor Hunt Road.  Follow the portage signs along the river.
 Put in on beach below the dam across from the Tavern.

Put-In Directions (10.9 miles, 15 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 28 to Route 10 toward Northfield/Greefield:
  1. After getting off the highway, head north on Route 10.
  2. At mile 2.5, turn left onto Route 142 North.
  3. At mile 6.5 you enter the state of Vermont.
  4. At mile 10.8, turn right onto Governor Hunt Road.
  5. The dam will come into view quickly.  At mile 10.9, turn right onto a sandy road that goes to a beach.  If you have an ordinary car, you may want to park on the road and carry the short distance in to the water.

Follow the portage signs along Governor Hunt Road.
The river drops 36 feet.  There is a boat launching area, a beach, and a tavern across from the picnic area.
[3] Old Ferry Road Boat Access - Mile 151.5
Position: 42-53.58 N 72-32.17 W​
       Altitude: 223 feet
Description: 
There plenty of parking for all types of vehicles even trailers.  This shaded gravel area is excellent.

Directions (2.1 miles, 6 minutes):
From Interstate 91 Exit 3 Brattleboro/Keene NH Route 9 East:
  1. At the end of the exit ramp, turn onto Chesterfield Road.
  2. At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto Putney Road.
  3. At mile 0.8, turn right onto Old Ferry Road and follow through an industial park.
  4. At mile 1.6, there is a red Do Not Enter sign.  Ignore the sign and continue on. The sign is for the driveway on your right which is a Propane company.
  5. At mile 1.8, pass under a narrow underpass for the railroad tracks.  Turn right at the little sign State Fishing Access 
  6. At mile 2.0, arrive at the state access area.
This circular approach is excellent for trailer launching.
There is concrete pads to assist with trailer launching.
